Stewards of the Winooski Watershed
Friends of the Winooski River is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring the health of the Winooski River watershed in Central Vermont.
Friends of the Winooski River (FWR) was founded in 1998 and works closely with local residents, private landowners, organizations, and state and federal agencies to ensure that our rivers and the surrounding communities thrive.
The Winooski River flows 88 miles from its headwaters in Cabot to its confluence with Lake Champlain in Colchester, draining a 1,060-square-mile area. It is Lake Champlain’s largest watershed in Vermont, with 11% of Vermont’s total land and nearly a third of Vermont’s population.
Friends of the Winooski River supports river health through projects that reduce pollution, improve aquatic and riparian habitats, create resilient infrastructure, and connect communities to their waterways.
With a small staff and a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors, Friends of the Winooski River works to build a culture of stewardship, resilience, and sustainable enjoyment of our rivers.
