Ranchers Stewardship Alliance

Ranchers Stewardship Alliance (RSA) is a rancher-led nonprofit rooted in the grasslands of north-central Montana. Formed in 2003 by more than 30 ranch families, RSA works to strengthen the resilience of ranching communities through land stewardship, education, and conservation partnerships.

At its core, RSA believes ranchers are key to preserving the Northern Great Plains. These working lands support not only rural economies but also crucial habitat for more than 350 wildlife species. From the greater sage-grouse, pronghorn antelope, and swift fox to grassland songbirds like Sprague’s pipit, chestnut-collared longspur, and Baird’s sparrow, these grasslands are teeming with life that depends on healthy, intact rangeland.

RSA helps private landowners implement infrastructure improvements that benefit both their ranch operations and the ecosystems they manage. Through cost-share programs, ranchers can access funding and support to develop water systems, install wildlife-friendly fencing, adopt rotational grazing strategies, and restore native grasslands. These projects support stronger root systems, better water infiltration, improved soil health, and expanded habitat for wildlife — all while keeping ranches productive and viable.

RSA’s work proves that conservation and agriculture are not mutually exclusive. Whether restoring prairies, supporting young producers, or preparing for drought, RSA leads with trust, collaboration, and a deep respect for the land and people of the Northern Great Plains.
